Definition
The CITAble Business Index (CBI) is the integrating meta-index that FW.VISION uses to assess whether a business is future-proof. It answers a single question: is this venture aligned to a future worth actualizing, and is it built to reach that future rather than wait for it?
CBI is not a survey score. It is a traceable measure of coherence: the degree to which a venture’s problem, its way of working, and its effect on society hold together over a long horizon.
The Four-Quadrant Alignment
A future-proof venture satisfies four conditions at once. CBI reads all four and reports where a business is strong and where it is exposed.

A business can be profitable today and still fail all four. CBI exists to surface that gap before the market does.
How FW.VISION Uses It
FW.VISION applies the CITAble framework to assess businesses and ensure strategic alignment of futures. CBI is the instrument: it screens ventures for alignment to the futures FW.VISION theorises, and it monitors ventures already inside a coalition or fund. Where FW.VISION explores the underlying possible trajectories, CBI is how a candidate venture is checked against them.
Relationship to the Instruments
CBI integrates three sub-instruments:
- Cognitive Vitality Index (CVI) measures the cognition of the organisation.
- Agentic Gradient measures the depth of AI adoption and integration.
- Societal Resilience Index (SRI) measures the venture’s contribution to a stable society.
Together with two native dimensions, Active Futuring and Horizon Coherence, they resolve into the single CBI reading.
Why It Is Citable
CBI is designed to be traceable. Every reading decomposes into its sub-indices and their evidence, so a partner, a fund, or a councillor can follow the score back to the underlying signals. Citability is the property that makes the assessment trustworthy: the conclusion can be audited, not just asserted.
